US OPEN

Home Slam

The Americans were in bliss! For the first time they had a home town champion. Tony Titan won his first ever US Open title and at the same time over took the number 1 ranking from Pelligra heading into the Masters.

This was a dream come true for the American as he finally added another slam to his name in recent years other than the Australian. Titan now only misses a Wimbledon championship to achieve the career slam.

In a rematch of last years final, the roles reversed and finally Titan was able to beat Pelligra in New York after losing to him four times, the last two of which were in the finals. Titan bookends the slams this season winning the first and last and for the first time ever, collects two slams in one season. He also picked up his sixth title of the season. One better than last season, a personal best. He now only needs to make the Masters Cup final to lock the ranking for the year. That would be another first for not only him but any player other than Pelligra.

Titan clearly had his game face on from the first point. Despite Pelligra clearly not being on his game, Titan took it to him and handed Pelligra his worst slam loss.

It wasn't all smooth sailing for Titan. He was locked in a semi final battle with Civello. Despite the score being 6-3 the match took close to an hour to play and was everything the champ could handle. That's back to back years where the Italian almost upset Titan in the US semis. Civello finished his season with a gutsy effort but will surly be disappointed he didn't rejoin the others in Antarctica.

Pelligra did pick up a couple of wins despite his finals disappointment. Fist he ended the season of Garofalo then took out Vurro in the US Open semi. It was the first grand slam meeting for these two since the 2009 US Open final where Vurro shocked Pelligra to win the title. Two whole years!

Vurro went on to win the consolation and qualify for the Masters Cup after missing it last season.

This is the first season ever that Pelligra failed to claim a grand slam. The Canadian was clearly off his game all season long. Question is, was it an off year or a sign of things to come?
